Two UNC Pi Kapp's Named Award Winners Cody Poplin '12 has been named the recipient of the Pi Kappa Phi Foundation’s Otis R. McCollum Memorial Scholarship, which recognizes excellence in academics and volunteerism. Awarded annually to a member of the fraternity who is enrolled at one of 13 North Carolina institutions where Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity currently has an undergraduate chapter, Poplin is the first Carolina student to receive the award since its inception in 1997.
The award is named for Otis R. McCollum, a 1953 graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill and initiate of Pi Kappa Phi’s Kappa Chapter. McCollum, a former Trustee of the Pi Kappa Phi Foundation, passed away in 1997, but through his estate made provisions to create this award which bears his name.
Matthew Hoehn '12 was named a 2011 Pi Kapp Scholar. The highest and most prestigious academic award offered by the Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity, Hoehn joins four other students from Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity in receiving this distinction, but is the only one from UNC-Chapel Hill in this year’s selection. Created in 1927, the Pi Kapp Scholar award singles out those student members of the fraternity who excel in the classroom and who also show demonstrated leadership within their chapter and campus community. Griffin Daughtridge ’11 was recently named a recipient of the prestigious 2011-2012 Fullbright Fellowship. A 4-year member of Chi Psi Fraternity at UNC, Daughtridge served his chapter as a recruitment chair and social chair. He is currently spending his Fullbright term in Columbia conducting his project, “The Epidemiology of the Hepatitis B Virus after 20 years of Vaccination.” UNC Chi Psi Named 2011 Rhodes Scholar
The Rhodes Trust announced the 2011 class of Rhodes Scholars, and Paul Shorkey ’11, a brother of Chi Psi Fraternity, was among the elite group of 32 of the nation’s top students. As a recipient of the scholarship, Shorkey has the opportunity to study at the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom for two to three years. He is one of 14 Rhodes Scholars to come out of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill chapter of Chi Psi since 1938. Previous recipients are John Foreman '38, Robert W. Spearman '65, Thomas M. Bello '71, Ford Runge '74, Jim Cooper '76, Hubertus Jan Van Der Vaart '77, Robert Allen Long, Jr. '80, Caleb Kimball King '81, Bryan Hassel '88, Ryan Balot '90, David Ball '92, Ben Lundin '07, and Henry Spelman '10. UNC Greek crowned Mrs. UNC in 2011 Homecoming election Congratulations to Holly Roberts for being crowned Mrs. UNC! She garnered over a thousand votes in the Homecoming election, and will soon start working on her platform: Tar Heels for Troops. She wants to begin the project by recruiting more volunteers and planning events, like a store in the Pit that will help raise money for soldiers. UNC’s Greek community made a strong showing in the election, as five out of the six finalists were Greek: Holly Roberts (Phi Mu) Camile Jones (Alpha Kappa Alpha) Tabitha Linville (Phi Beta Chi) Chris Lyle (Kappa Alpha Psi) Eric Campbell (Alpha Phi Alpha) Congratulations are also in order for Clint Hannah, the new Mr. UNC. He plans to begin work on his project, Club Nova, by organizing a clothing drive for the center, which provides support for people living with mental illness in Orange County.
